TY qualifies for Texas Amateur!!!

TY qualified for the 104th Texas Amateur presented by Insperity. This year the event will be held at Lakeside Country Club in Houston, TY's hometown. The past champions lists reads as a who's who from the PGA TOUR with Texan greats such as Ben Crenshaw, Mark Brooks, Bob Estes, Scott Verplank and Bruce Leitzkie all wining the championship during their amateur days.

TY qualified at Comanche Trace, a course that we've played the last few years, although we had never played the third nine which TY finished on. He birdied the par 5 4th and turned in two over par 38. He then birdied 12 and 14, but dropped shots on 13, 15 and 16. TY once again took advantage of his length and birdied the par 5 17th by curling in a seven footer. After a green in regulation on the 18th, he negotiated 75 feet in two putts to secure his par and post a 74, avoiding a playoff for the final spot.

2013 Alumni Match

We had another great alumni match at Brackenridge Park. It was great to get some of the old players back together and have them meet the new student-athletes. Mix in some great golf and weather and it was a pretty good Saturday. The alumni won both fourball matches and the two sides split the singles matches 2-2, giving the alumni the 4-2 advantage.

SCAC POTW: Kalen Vos

Kalen picked up another SCAC Golfer of the Week award when he won the West Region Invitational! That is his third Golfer of the Week honor of the year and the Tigers have claimed four of the five. The first two rounds Kalen hit 13 and 14 GIRs, which is right around his average for the year. The final day, his ball striking wasn't as solid but he managed only 27 putts to keep his round together and win the event by two strokes.

West Region Invitational

Congratulations to Kalen Vos for winning his first collegiate tournament! After a slew of top five finishes, things finally worked out for him to take medalist honors. TY had another great finish ending the tournament in solo third and joining Kalen on the All-Tournament Team. We really needed a team win in the event, but we were unable to earn the title. We'll leave for our conference championship next Thursday in attempts to win our first SCAC title since 2005.

West Cup

This was our first trip out to Goose Creek Golf Club for the first ever West Cup. As you can see, the course was in fantastic shape. While forgiving off the tee, the green complexes were very difficult, with drop offs that filtered into collection areas and greens running 12s on the stimpmeter.

The 422 yd par 4 15th from the dogleg.
The par 3s were very demanding. Here is TY on the 185 yd 2nd.

The 18th at Goose Creek is one of the hardest holes the guys have played all year. It is a 466 yard par 4 with water all down the right side through the green. The bunker straight ahead is an unreachable 336, but it provides a good aim point. Tuesdays back pin made it extremely difficult to save par from a left of the green bail out.

Oak Hills CC Qualifier

Blake Turner won the qualifier for our upcoming trip to California. After an opening 39 on the front, he shot an incoming 36 to finish with a 75, winning in convincing fashion. Oak Hills Country Club was in great shape as the pictures below show.
B Turner two putted the difficult 13th.

B Turner got down in two from 15ft over the pin on the 203 yard 18th.

Jekyll Island Intercollegiate Invitational

We completed another eventful tournament in Jekyll Island this past Sunday. Unfortunately our scoring Saturday and Sunday left much to be desired. We had the easier morning tee times and failed to post the good team scores necessary to make the move we needed. Some great nine hole stretches by some of the guys but not enough consistent scoring when you're playing against a deep field.

The Ranch

We were able to stay at a private residence near the course that we call The Ranch. As usual, the guys had a great time exploring the property and taking in the sights and the sounds. This is always one of our most fun trips as there is exotic wildlife, a lake and whole lot of fun things to do on the property.

We played a lot of table tennis over the four days. "I need my butterfly."

ELG got the best of Austin at the air hockey table.

Schreiner Spring Shootout

Unfortunately, the first round was cancelled to extreme winds. We were able to play 18 holes Tuesday and we took third place. We had players play great stretches of golf, but with only 18 holes, there wasn't enough time to recover from a few of our early round mistakes.

T5 Kalen Vos 74
T7 Alex Hartzell 75
T9 Tyler Lehmann 76
T18 Erik Long-Goheen 78

Alex was tied for the tournament lead with 5 birdies, all coming on his final 9 holes.
TY had 4 birdies.

TY played the par 3s at even, tied for first in the field.
Alex played the par 4s at even, tied for second in the field.

The guys just finished up their off season match play tournament at the end of January. The seeding was based upon fall tournament scoring averages. The majority of the matches were completed in the fall, but the championship match carried over into the spring. A Look into Spring: Events 4-6

Event 4: April 8-9
The West Region will again be hosted at  Berry Creek Country Club in Georgetown, TX. Despite the 2nd place finish last year, I thought we played very mediocre so I'm thankful we'll have another crack at it. The course is pretty short, but there were only 4 rounds under par for the 54 hole event.
2012 Results

Event 5: April 20-21
The SCAC Championship will have a completely different look this year. We'll play match play in Shreveport, LA at Southern Trace Country Club. With only four teams competing this year, there will be two matches of competition over two days for each team. The first day the two semifinal matches will be contested. The second day, the losers will play for third place and the winners will play in the championship match. The coaches will pair players in individual matches with the winner earning a point for his team. The first team to three points wins the match. Hopefully the format will be a fun and dramatic way to crown a conference champion.

Event 6: May 14-17
The NCAAs will be held in Sandestin, FL at The Links Golf Club and the the Raven Golf Club. If we play well in the five events of the Spring, we'll earn a bid to compete with the nation's best. Since our conference doesn't earn an automatic bid (Pool A), we will have two opportunities to make the event. Pool B, those schools competing without an automatic qualifier and Pool C, the best teams that don't earn a bid via A or B.

Pool B-4 teams
Pool C-7 teams

A Look into Spring: Events 1-3

The guys and I are really excited about our upcoming schedule. It will provide us an excellent opportunity to test ourselves with great courses and competition.

Event 1: February 25-26
We will try to defend our title at the Schreiner Spring Shootout at  Comanche Trace in Kerrville, TX. We've played this course the past three years so our guys are very familiar with the layout. There is a great mix of high risk/reward tee shots and the course provides a lot of great birdie chances but typically the individual winner is still over par. The weather can be a little dicey in late February, but the course is always in great shape with the bent greens being some of the quickest we see all year.
2012 Results

Event 2: March 15-17
The spring break trip to Jekyll Island, GA is always a highlight of the year. The tournament is huge, with 30 men's teams alternating between morning and afternoon tee times over three days at Pine Lakes. The course allows you to play toward your strengths and typically yields some low scores throughout the week. The majority of the top 25 is at the event and the national picture really shakes out after this week.
2012 Results

Event 3: March 25-26
The is the first year the West Cup is being contested. Hosted by LaVerne just southeast of Los Angeles at Goose Creek Golf Club, the tournament has attracted most of the best teams on the west coast. I'm told the course is solid, so I'm anxious to see how we perform out west.
